The Sea Beast was made for Netflix Animation, one of the first features with an in house Netflix Animation team. It was great to work with some old friends and colleagues!
I had the chance to work on both characters and environments. As one of the first artists on the show I was responsible for creating libraries of textures and materials as well as establishing cohesive workflows that helped keep a consistent look between assets.
Jacob, the main character crossed my desk early on in production. He was our test asset to establish the look and feel for all our costumes across the film. After Jacob's outfit was completed I moved onto Sarah the deck hand and several other crew members. I also assisted several other character outfits due to complexity.
Almost every costume has some sort of ornate stitching or embroidery. I created a system using simple artist input maps and a Substance Designer graph to generate complex embroidery textures that were then projected in Mari. These maps contained variation in displacement, specularity, and metallic value. As well, all the wood used on the ship was derived from several Substance graphs I created early on in production.
